The struggle to use a computer-based software code freely available to all, begins to take shape. So far, Linux has opened up the channel to open source software, play an important role today. The first hardware manufacturer to give an important step in this direction has been Gigabyte, Taiwanese manufacturer that specializes in parts for home PC's. The GIGABYTE M57SLI-S4 is the first motherboard BIOS that works with a free and open source. This has been possible thanks to Yinghai Lu, an engineer at AMD, released the code with GPL this BIOS last month.
This motherboard is based on the NVIDIA nForce 570 SLI chipset and supports socket AMD2 the latest AMD. Other features of this model are:
- Supports AMD Athlon 64 X2, Athlon 64 FX and Athlon 64.
- 2x PCI Express x16.
- 3x PCI Express x1.
- 2x PCI.
- 3 1394th (FireWire) ports.
- 10x USB 2.0.
- RAM up to 16GB.
- SATA RAID.
- 6x SATA 3Gb / s slots.
The product is available in several online stores (although not mentioned in that) and video BIOS is available from the SVN server LinuxBIOS.
