The WinFS project will be discontinued
When Windows released more details about Windows Vista (Codename Longhorn), one of the big news was the relational file system (a hybrid between a traditional file system and database), called WinFS (originally meant Future Storage, now is File System). It was announced that perhaps would in previous versions of Windows Vista, to test the operation. WinFS was based primarily on an existing file system, the NTFS, and supplemented with queries to a server derivative of Microsoft SQL Server, making all data were related. However, there was dissatisfaction with the functionality of Microsoft technology. Many problems arose, and it was not any progress on the project. The worse thing to the case of delayed several times in the development of WinFS, until the June 24, the development team responsible for Microsoft WinFS officially announced in his blog that the project would be discontinued as a relational file system, and that betas planned for the future, have been canceled.
