The strange properties of the moonlight

The moon has been observed and studied from the antiquity. Many writers have dedicated his proses to this star, the only natural satellite of our planet. The moonlight, it has typical properties, in addition to the romanticism that it unties.

  1. The moonlight steals the color of what it illuminates. Let's take a rose. With the full moonlight the flower has a burning sheen and even projects shade, but the red one does not meet, has been replaced with tones of gray color. In fact the whole scenery is like that. It is like seeing the world across an old black and white TV set.
  2. If you look at the gray scenery during the sufficient time, this one becomes blue. The best place to appreciate this effect called “blue displacement” or “displacement Purkinje” (in honor of the scientist of the XIXth century Johanes Purkinje that was the first one in describing it) is in the field, far from the artificial light. As his eyes achieve the maximum adaptation to the darkness, the blue appears. The movies producers, often place a blue filter when they film night scenes to create a more natural effect, and the artists add the blue to his pictures of night sceneries for the same reason. Nevertheless, if you look at the Full moon, certainly it is not blue. (It notices: The thin ashes of a volcano or of the fires in the forests can do that the Moon seems blue, but this is another history).
  3. The moonlight will not allow him to read. Open a book under the full moon. At first sight the pages seem sufficiently illuminated. Nevertheless when it tries to see the words, it cannot do it. Even more, if it fixes his sight in a this word it will disappear. The moonlight not only does that our vision is blurry but also it produces a small blind spot. (Another note: As in everything human, there are exceptions. Some persons have cones especially sensitive or a major quantity of canes that they allow to read with the moonlight).

The light does not express the light that we perceive at night; simply it is the reflex of the lunar surface of the light of the Sun, and the moonlight is approximately 400,000 times weaker than the expressed one by the Sun. In general, it is possible to appreciate major lighting during the final months of the year; in this epoch, it is possible to see a beautiful and giant full moon, which has reddish tones and which seems bigger than the normal thing; there is called he to this a moon of harvest (Harvest moon), and it will happen exactly today, On October 6, therefore it is worth while appreciating the beautiful natural spectacle.
